William Boettcher

Director of State and Private Forestry for the Northern and Intermountain Regions of the USDA Forest Service

William Boettcher earned a Bachelor's of Science in Forest Management from Washington State University in 1972. He worked seasonally on the St. Joe National Forest during college, and became a permanent Forest Service employee in silviculture on the Clearwater National Forest after graduating. He held numerous leadership positions, serving as District Ranger at Murphy Lake Ranger District on the Kootenai National Forest and Resource Management Officer for the Idaho Panhandle National Forest. In 1990, Boettcher became staff assistant to the Regional Forester of the Northern Region in Missoula, Montana. He next served the Northern Region as Assistant Director for Vegetation Management before becoming the Region's Director of State and Private Forestry in 1996. In 1997, Boettcher was named as Director of State and Private Forestry for the Intermountain Region in Ogden, Utah, and continues to serve in that joint capacity. The two-region State and Private Forestry Program includes the Cooperative Forestry, Forest Health Protection, International Forestry, and Tribal Relations Programs. The National Association of State Foresters recognized Boettcher by presenting him the Jim Roberts Current Achievement Partnership Award in October of 2000. He was also awarded a Distinguished Service Award for Outstanding Contributions to Western State and Private Forestry by the Council of Western State Foresters in May of 2002.
