Dr. W. Wallace Covington

Professor of Forest Ecology, Northern Arizona University

Dr. Covington has served as professor of Forest Ecology at Northern Arizona University (NAU) since 1975. He received his Ph.D. in ecosystem sciences from Yale University in 1976.

Dr. Covington directs NAU's Ecological Restoration Institute (ERI). The ERI is recognized as a national leader in forest restoration-based fuel reduction technology transfer, outreach, in-service education, public information, and mission oriented research for forest restoration. The Institute and its partners in federal, state, private, and NGO sectors have the talent and expertise in place and are applying it to get operational scale forest health restoration treatments on the ground. Working with partners, the Institute has built strong local, state, regional, and national support for restoration-based fuel treatments.

Dr. Covington has received national and international recognition for his work in forest ecosystem health, restoration ecology, and fire effects on forest ecosystems. He was recognized as Outstanding Teaching Scholar by NAU in 1990 for his dedication to involving undergraduates in his research projects and bringing research results into the classroom.

His work on restoration of ecosystem health is often cited in the national news media.
