Dr. Mark Nechodom

Head of Social and Policy Sciences, Sierra Nevada Research Center

Mark Nechodom is head of Social and Policy Sciences at the Sierra Nevada Research Center, a multi-disciplinary unit of the Pacific Southwest Research Station of the USDA Forest Service. Nechodom's current research focuses on the economic and policy aspects of biomass utilization and renewable energy. He also continues to study the institutional dynamics of environmental decision-making and the roles of local government and NGOs in ecosystem restoration and reinvestment. Nechodom has been a consultant and researcher in Latin America on agricultural and environmental policy and has traveled globally on official trade and environmental delegations.
Mark joined the Forest Service after several years on the research faculty at the University of California, Davis. At UC Davis, he founded and co-directed the Land Use and Natural Resources program, one of the nation's top education and training programs for local land use and natural resource management career professionals. He also established and directed the Public Policy and Natural Resources Education program at California State University, Sacramento. In both private practice and as a public employee, he has been a research consultant to the California Department of Forestry, the US Environmental Protection Agency, the US Bureau of Land Management and several public and private environmental management agencies. Nechodom holds a doctorate in political theory and environmental politics from the University of California, Santa Cruz.
