Vern Northrup

Forestry Technician, Fond du Lac Reservation

Vern Northrup has worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs as a Forestry Technician since 1990 and has worked in the arena of wildland fire since 1987. Vern's duty station, the Fond du Lac Reservation located in northeastern Minnesota, is also his home. As a member of the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, Vern's commitment to protection of the Fond du Lac community goes beyond fire prevention and suppression efforts to include a desire to preserve and nurture the cultural practices and traditions of the Ojibwe people. Nationally recognized for his work in fire, Vern was most recently awarded the Star Award for Aviation Safety from the BIA. Vern also recently received an award from the BIA recognizing his work in the Firewise Program which led to the recognition of the Fond du Lac Reservation as the first Firewise Reservation in the U.S.
