Mike
has almost 25 years in journalism, much of it involved in covering the
myriad of issues surrounding the environment, public land, forest health,
and the policies that affect them. For the past 13 years, he's published
the Long Valley Advocate, a weekly newspaper, in Cascade, Idaho. Cascade
lost its Boise Cascade Corp. lumber mill in May, 2001. He is a 1983 graduate
of the University of Idaho, where he started his education in the then
College of Forestry, Wildlife and Range Sciences. He has owned property
in Valley County, Idaho, for more than 20 years. He understands what makes
the
economies of Idaho's rural mountain towns work, and has been through the
battles, both as a business owner and community member. He was hired nine
months ago by the City of Cascade to manage its fledgling Cascade Forest
Resource Center, a business incubator that city officials hope will develop
into a cluster of small businesses centered on the use of biomass and
small-diameter trees.
