Arizona - Stewardship Contracting Projects
Forest Service
- Cottonwood/Sundown Watershed Project, Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest
The Cottonwood/Sundown Watershed Project restored riparian habitat in three separate portions of Cottonwood Wash. Restoration of these areas involved the removal of ponderosa pine and juniper, both of which invaded the riparian corridors and related drainages and are currently out-competing native riparian species. A contract was awarded in FY 2001 and project is complete.
- Grand Canyon Stewardship, Coconino National Forest
The Grand Canyon Stewardship project is part of the larger Greater Flagstaff Forests Partnership, which seeks ultimately to treat approximately 100,000 acres of urban/wildland interface around Flagstaff, AZ through annual treatment of approximately 10,000 acre blocks. Specific objectives for the project include managing forest fuels to reduce wildfire risk; addressing issues of ecosystem degradation; protecting T/E species habitat; enhancing wildlife habitat and forage; protecting watersheds; and improving forest health, productivity and vitality. Six contracts were awarded between FY 2001 and FY 2003.
- Montlure/Benny Thinning and Fuels Reduction, Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest
The Montlure/Benny project is designed to reduce wildfire risk within the community and improve firefighter and public safety by managing fuels and fuel-loads. Two contracts were awarded in FY 2002 and 2003 and this project is now complete.
- Ranch Iris, Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest
The Ranch Iris project is designed to reduce wildfire risk and improve the health and vigor of forests through a reduction in tree densities. Two contracts were awarded in FY 2002.
- Alpine WUI-1, Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest
The Alpine WUI-1 project will implement the live and dead standing tree reduction within the Alpine Wildland/Urban Interface (WUI) Fuels Reduction Project and thin out the main canopy for reduced risk of crown fire spread. The number of acres proposed for treatment is approximately 523.
- White Mountain Stewardship Project , Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest
White Mountain Stewardship Project will implement a landscape scale treatment of wildland urban interface land that will reduce fuel loading and catastrophic fire risk. The project will reduce fuel treatment cost and improve forest productivity. The contract was awarded in FY 2004.

- The East Trumbull Project, Arizona Strip Field Office
The East Trumbull stewardship project includes thinning 69 acres to reduce the risk of stand replacing wildfire in an area dominated by ponderosa pine, pinyon pine and juniper. The area is culturally important with numerous sites that cannot be disturbed. The project affords an opportunity to partner with the Kaibab-Paiute Tribe who can directly utilize the small diameter trees as fuel wood in their community.
- The Tuweep Project, Arizona Strip Field Office
The project is designed to create a 16 acre fuel break in an area dominated by pinyon pine and juniper as a protective measure for the Mt. Trumbull Wilderness. The project will reduce the threat of stand replacing wildfire to the ponderosa pine stand in the wilderness on the top of Mt. Trumbull and restore the site to a more biologically diverse ecosystem.
