Fire Prevention Road Signs
North Carolina Division of Forest Resources
2007

Road sign: North Carolina Division of Forest Resources, Smokey Bear, and Prevent Wildfires.

Early in 2006, the North Carolina Division of Forest Resources decided to produce fire prevention signs to be place along roads throughout the State.

A statewide study was in North Carolina to find the areas of highest fire occurrence in each of the states one hundred counties. These signs would be placed in these areas to make people aware of the need to be vigilant regarding wildfire prevention. By far, the vast majority of wildfires in North Carolina are human caused, and therefore are preventable.

Four hundred road signs were produced from heavy gauge aluminum, and reflective paints and coatings. They were produced in three sizes, 18x24 inches, 24x32 inches, and 36x48 inches. Galvanized sign posts, nuts and bolts were purchased for each.

The signs and hardware were distributed to all the counties in North Carolina and have been placed as closes as possible to the areas designated in the earlier study. These signs have increased the awareness of citizens throughout the state in the need to protect our forest from wildfires.
