National Fire Plan Success Story

National Forests and Grasslands in Texas
Angelina/Sabine Ranger District, Texas
2007

Prescribed Fire

The district accomplished nearly 60,000 acres of quality prescribed fire in FY07. This successful prescribed fire accomplishment resulted in improved wildlife habitat and improved fuels conditions. This has very positively affected fuels conditions in the wildland urban interface and improved the habitat of the endangered Red-cockaded woodpecker (RCW). In fact, related to the RCW, biologists are excited to report that 3 new clusters have been discovered as a result of improved habitat in areas prescribed burned in FY07.

Mechanical Fuels Treatment

The district was seriously impacted by Hurricane Rita in September 2005. Approximately 15,000 acres were treated with tree removal actions utilizing timber sale contracts.

During the Rita response, about 2400 acres of Wildland Urban Interface were identified that needed mechanical treatment. The contract remains active with approximately 80% of the work completed of the $1.93 million contract.

In addition, approximately 7400 acres of young pine stands in the area affected by Hurricane Rita were identified on the district as critical for WUI treatment. Work is in progress to thin these stands to reduce the WUI risks. Though this will take a number of years, stands making up about 25% of the area should be prepared for contract through FY09.
