National Fire Plan - Community Assistance
2008
Petrified Forest National Park provided basic wildland fire training materials, personal protective gear, and fire shelters, in the form of a grant of $14,500.00 to the Puerco Valley Fire District in 2008. This support was made possible through the Rural Fire Assistance Program under the National Fire Plan. The Puerco Valley Fire District in Sanders, Ariz. provides mutual aid assistance in and around the park.
Puerco Valley Fire District Fire Chief Gary Mills said, "We would like to let you know that our grant has greatly helped us in a number of different ways. The new radios have given us the ability to be in contact with agencies we could never reach before. The combination tools are excellent and save both time and space, the new generation fire shelters were a must and each firefighter is now equipped with the safest shelters available."
