National Fire Plan - Fuels Reduction
2009
Without accident or injury, National Park Service Northeast and National Capital Region parks achieved almost 130% of their targeted treatment acreage as of June 2009. Some mechanical treatments and pile burning are still in progress. Fire specialists were ready when weather conditions created excellent burning conditions in late winter and early spring. In addition to assistance from many nearby agencies, this year credit also goes to the Bandelier Wildland Fire Module, which supplemented in-region fire staff and militia for about three weeks in March 2009.
Contributing to the success were mechanical treatments at Acadia National Park, and burns at Cape Cod National Seashore, Assateague Island National Seashore, Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park, Antietam National Battlefield, Richmond National Battlefield Park, Appomattox Court House National Historical Park, Saratoga National Historical Park and Shenandoah National Park.
