On May 5-6, 2010, Grand Canyon National Park fire, aviation, and emergency services personnel hosted a Slovenian delegation from the First International Responder Exchange (FIRE) program.

The delegation consisted of eight Slovenian first responders, including several firefighters/EMTs, a cave rescue technician, a clinic administrator, an emergency room nurse and a teacher, as well as their American first responder escorts.

While in the park, the delegation experienced visits to the park’s helibase, clinic, new dispatch center, and fire and ambulance bays, as well as briefings on the park’s wildland fire, structural fire, search and rescue and preventive search and rescue programs. They also had the opportunity to enjoy a barbecue, great views and a guided hike in between.

The FIRE program was started in 1999 and is intended to open doors to new countries, people and cultures while improving understanding, cooperation and preparedness for national and international emergencies.
