The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service New Mexico Fire District staff works hard on public education because they believe it is the key to successfully managing refuge lands.
One of the district’s winter projects involved building a fire prevention and education trailer. The trailer is devoted to reaching children and adults in a fun way. It made its debut at the 2009 Festival of the Cranes at Bosque del Apache Refuge and will continue to be used at public events.

Smokey Bear’s friendly face draws people to the trailer where they can watch videos and talk to Service personnel about conservation and fire management. Not only does the effort help the district spread the fire prevention message, but it is also being used to reach out and recruit people who may be interested in a career with the Service or other land management agencies.
