National Fire Plan Success Story
Park Supports Department with Rural Fire Assistance Grant
Tonto National Monument, Arizona
National Fire Plan - Community Assistance
2011
Tonto National Monument provided needed fire equipment to assist with both structural and wildland firefighting in the form of a grant of $5000.00 to Tonto Basin Fire District in 2010. The equipment purchased included fittings, nozzles, tools, and a tank rack. This support was made possible through the Rural Fire Assistance Program under the National Fire Plan. The Tonto Basin Fire District in Tonto Basin, Arizona provides mutual aid assistance in and around the monument.
The 1,120-acre national monument has a memorandum of understanding with Tonto Basin Fire District. The agreement provides for response and assistance with suppression of wildland and structural fires. This is the second Rural Fire Assistance Grant received by Tonto Basin Fire District. The first was received in 2008 and was used to provide the local firefighters with specialized wildland fire equipment including mobile radios and personal protective equipment.
"We are pleased to be able to support the efforts of the Tonto Basin Fire District," stated Terry Saunders, park superintendent. "Through this funding we were able to once again enhance their rural fire protection capabilities.”
