The multiagency event included fire staff from the USDA Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service, and Grants Fire Department.

On March 31, 2011, the fire management staff at El Malpais National Monument staffed a fire management station at Safety Day in Grants, New Mexico. The multiagency event represented the partnerships between fire staff from the USDA Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service, and Grants Fire Department. Smokey Bear participated as well.

Approximately 140 people participated in the event. Children posed for their photographs with Smokey Bear and Firewise information and brochures on preparing homes and properties for the fire season were handed out to area residents.

The event occurred in conjunction with New Mexico’s Wildfire Awareness Week, and supported this year’s theme, “Where we live, How we live…Living with wildfire in the Southwest.
