National Fire Plan - Fuels Reduction
2008
The Martin Cooperative Prescribed Fire Project is located on the Hell Canyon Ranger District of the Black Hills National Forest. The project is located within the vicinity of the At-Risk Communities (ARCs) of Custer, Pringle, and Argyle, South Dakota.
The Martin Cooperative Project was developed to improve wildlife habitat and reduce hazardous fuels. The project will treat approximately 3,400 acres on National Forest System Lands and approximately 816 acres of South Dakota Game Fish and Parks lands.
Currently project activities have been implemented on 1318 acres in 2007 and an additional 3,000+ acres are planned for 2008-09 on SD Game Fish and Parks, and Forest Service Lands, with financial contributions from the Rocky Mountain Elk foundation. This area supports 130 elk and is critical yearlong habitat for this area of the Black Hills. In April of 2008, Forest Service, Wind Cave National Park, South Dakota Division of Wildland Fire, and Game Fish and Parks crews treated an additional 374 acres on State lands, with an additional cooperative effort planned for this fall.
Collaborative efforts occurred with the South Dakota State Game Fish and Parks, South Dakota Division of Wildland Fire, and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. Cooperators either contributed implementation resources and or financial assistance during this tremendous collaboration effort.
