More than 13,000 readers of the free newspaper, the Jackson Hole Daily learned how to be more fire smart through a four-week ad campaign featuring a different ad each week that was sponsored by Teton Interagency Fire through a Firewise education grant. The ad campaign culminated the Wednesday prior to Labor Day, just in time for short but very visible fire season this fall in western Wyoming.

The newspaper then compiled the half-page, full-color ads into a tabloid style, four-page color insert that ran in the Jackson Hole News and Guide, which has 11,500 subscribers. Teton Interagency Fire received 7,500 extra inserts to use as handouts. By using both newspapers with a slightly different approach, fire education specials from Grand Teton National Park, Bridger-Teton National Forest and Jackson Hole Fire/EMS determined the messages would reach the largest possible target audience.

The first ad featured a structure protection photo from the 2001 Green Knoll Fire near Wilson in Teton County, WY. The ad presented factors that affect wildfires: fuels (specific to the fuel types in Teton County), weather and topography.

The second ad gave tips on protecting your home, and featured a detailed graphic displaying the home protection zones.

Ad three showed that defensible space is beautiful space, rather than a yard devoid of all vegetation. The final ad discussed maintenance and showed the benefits of defensible space.

Teton Interagency Fire includes participation from Grand Teton National Park, Bridger-Teton National Forest, Jackson Hole Fire/EMS and Wyoming State Forestry Division.
