National Fire Plan Success Story

National Park Service Provides Local Firefighters Rural Fire Assistance Grant
Fort Davis National Historic Site, Texas
National Fire Plan - Community Assistance
2011

The National Park Service (NPS), through Fort Davis National Historic Site, provided $5,000 in rural fire assistance (RFA) funding to the Fort Davis Volunteer Fire Department in August, 2010. The funding will provide wildland fire equipment and personal protective gear to local volunteer firefighters including wildland fire shelters, firefighting tools and equipment.

The National Park Service has provided RFA funding to local volunteer fire departments to improve their wildland firefighting capability each year since 2001. This ongoing partnership helps foster collaboration at the local level and improves firefighter safety.

“Our department is always grateful for assistance with improving our response capabilities and the safety of fire department members. The funding from the National Park Service’s Rural Fire Assistance and our relationship with the staff at the historic site helps us to provide quality service to our community.” stated Chief Robert Poenisch, Fort Davis Volunteer Fire Department.
